You guys like metal music?

Recommended Posts

I recently just started getting into it.

Disturbed initially sparked my interest several years ago.

Then last year I moved onto old Metallica songs from the 80's like 'For Whom The Bell Tolls' and 'Harvester of Sorrow'.

Now I'm just starting to listen to Iron Maiden and I'm blown away.  I mean, I'm not really into their big hits like 'The Number of the Beast' or 'Run to the Hills', but I was very into 'Hallowed be thy Name'.

'Dance of Death' is simply on another level however.  I mean my god!  When I first listened to it, it nearly brought me to tears because the song is just the perfect balance of raw power, pure beauty, grace, vivid lyrics, and a haunting story.

I wish I had discovered metal when I was younger.

Suggestions:

Basically, anything Black Sabbath or Dio and I'm happy. ;)

Metal, alternative/hard/punk/rap rock for me

As far as metal goes I've gotten into Slipknot fairly recently, especially after seeing them live last year.

I grew up in the 80s surrounded by metal. At the time I didn't see a distinction between acts like Poison or Motley Crue and acts like Iron Maiden or Metallica. I just considered all of it Metal and loved it. As the 90s rolled in and the Glam Metal (Hair Metal) acts faded into the background I began to see the distinction, but still loved it all. I'm not militantly against the current era of metal, but prefer something with a good guitar solo in it.

I discovered Steel Panther a while back and although I dig their sound, lyrically they overemphasize the misogyny and sexuality of the Glam Metal era to an almost pornographic level. I end up feeling like I need a shower after spinning one of their albums.

Disturbed is my #1 band.  I've been listening to them since The Sickness album.  Their music has gotten me through some pretty rough times.

Avenged Sevenfold is my favorite band actually. I love Waking the Fallen and the self-titled album. Those are both in my top ten favorite albums of all time.

Yeah man. I've been a metal-head since the 80s. My dad wasn't a big fan of my music choices. He was more of a country kind of guy.  I actually played in a metal/rock band for about 8 years. Just local and regional shows (North Texas) and an actual CD that was sold in our local Hastings and Vinyls stores. Too many awesome bands to mention, but Pantera will always have a soft spot because one of my really good friends was a bouncer at Joe's Garage in Ft. Worth where they really got started. I actually got to hang out with them on several occasions. He was also a bouncer at The Basement for a few years.

Black Sabbath, Metallica, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Slayer, Anthrax, Exodus, and Flotsam and Jetsam were the bands I listened to the most the first few years.

Dude, you met Pantera?! That makes me want to re-enact the "we're not worthy" scene from Wayne's World 2 XD

Yeah man. Of course, this was the pre-fame, Cowboys From Hell, and Vulgar days. They really were just riding the wave. They went from a semi- glam/hair band in the mid 80s to a metal powerhouse in the 90s. Every garage band's dream. I don't live too far from Phil now. They were cool guys to hang out with.  RIP Dime, he was a one of a kind dude. I kinda miss the old days. Now, I have to be all "presentable" and "professional". Getting old sucks. haha :)

Diamond Darrel! Lol that was his name before Dimebag. I enjoy most of what you guys noted earlier, mainly Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden and first 3 Metallica albums. Since on the topic of Pantera, I will say Down is awesome. Jimmy Bowers is the man. Which leads to Eyehategod. Then he did a small stint in Sourvein.

I grew up listening to punk, thrash, grindcore, sludge, hardcore, power violence, d-beat, crust etc. So the list of bands I could write here would be way too long. I used to be the human resources to a non profit art collective called Dayton Dirt Collective where I also promoted shows and played in a couple bands.

If anyone is interested in any of those genres and wants some suggestions, you can quote me here and lis t the subgenre you enjoy and we can discuss that.

For the Sabbath lovers, have you listened to Electric Wizard? Also listen to a song by Sleep called "Dragonaut". Also the band Saint Virus.

For thrash, check out Nuclear Assault. If you dig crossover Thrash, check out Hellnation, DRI.

Grindcore listen to Napalm Death "Scum", Carcass, Phobia, Pretty Little Flower, Noisear.

If you like punk, let me know if you enjoy crust, street, oi, pop, old school, or whatever and I can suggest some bands.

For the stoners, listen to Om, Weed eater, Bongzilla, Churches Burn. Down-tuned Blues metal type stuff.

Yeah, some of us choose to disregard the Terry Glaze Pantera days.  I have seen Down about 6 times. I've never seen Eyehategod live. Saint Virus? Did you mean Saint Vitus? If so, yeah, they are an awesome fucking band that put on a great show. Were you ever able to check out Sepultura? They put on one hell of a show too. I saw Napalm Death in the early 90's.

I never really got into punk and my choice of careers kind of precludes me from being a stoner! haha

Haha that is exactly whom I meant. Stupid autocorrect on my phone. I used to be a stoner back in the day, but still love Weedeater's album God Luck and Good Speed. I first saw Weedeater with Saint Vitus. I would love to see Down sometime. Guess you are lucky being down by Nola!

Yeah man, the music scene here is pretty awesome. Crowbar is another great band from around here. I haven't seen them since they re-hired "Sexy-T" Strange. If I ever hear about them going on tour again, I will be getting a ticket.

Hell man, I think you and I could hang out for hours talking about music and movies while playing old school video games and drinking the hell out of some microbrews! ?Of course, that would be while our "significant others" talked smack about how we "live in the past". ??

Edited by Rexfellis
I forgot about the video games

Lol you aren't wrong man! I am hoping to plan a trip next year to Nola. If I do, I am going to hit you up and we can all grab some food somewhere or something. Even chill and watch a flick or two, hang out on a porch with tunes and a case of brews. Maybe we will be lucky enough to have a good show in town then. This is all if I am lucky enough to save up and get the time off though.

Hell yeah man, I'm down. If you do make it down here, just let me know. Even if there isn't a show, there is plenty of shit to do in Nola on the cheap. And movies and some cold ones is always a good way to go. I understand about the time off/money thing. I'm always happy to show people the city, especially if they haven't been here before.

Been a metalhead for 18 years

Just to name a few of my favorites

In Flames, Soilwork, CoB, Hypocrisy, Trivium, Lamb of God, Coal Chamber, Devil Driver, Dark Tranquility, 36 Crazyfists, Five Finger Death Punch, Disturbed, Chevelle, Metallica, Slipknot, Stone Sour, Avatar, Breaking Benjamin, Korn, Metallica, Death Stars

Those are off the top of my head, then some more Gothic style bands, such as Emilie Autumn, Scream Silence, Nightwish, Within Temptation, Epica, Blutengel, Kamelot

Music is love, Music is life :)

I have been addicted to the new DT album - Atoma for the last couple of months

Love it!  I even liked the album Draiman did with Device.  A few tracks from that album fit nicely into my Disturbed playlist.
