Devs' used Marketplace Package?

Recommended Posts

*I CREATED THIS ORIGINALLY ON REDDIT AND IT WAS REMOVED BY EITHER THE MODERATORS OR DEVELOPERS. I JUST WANT OPINIONS.*

Not sure how accurate this is but it would be interesting to hear more thoughts on it.

By the looks of it, the developers bought an AI Package from the Unreal Marketplace for $80

I am having fun with the bots but it has to be said: This doesn't leave much room for improvement

Edit: Every time I go to post the link to the specific asset on the marketplace, it deletes the post

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HTFEPEE55Xs (skip to 2:28)

 https://www.unrealengine.com/marketplace/ai-behavior-toolkit

The "Edit:" was from my second reddit post.

P.S: Why is there a white background behind the text?

Hopefully this thread doesn't get deleted.

I have been enjoying bots because it's what I wanted but after hearing this and my reddit posts getting deleted it's really a turn off.

I'm a backer for Friday the 13th - I felt sorry for the developers when they claimed they are always at work, working hard and staying up late,  I stayed here through-out delays and even though annoying, I tried to keep my cool and not hate on them but this? This is outright disrespectful to the the community. Not only trying to hide the fact they may have used an asset, but also getting moderators to delete posts.

If this thread is to be removed, I'm done

I Don't care how they done it, loving offline bots, I'm done with online now until they get the servers up. If they never do though, I don't care, I backed this game to be Jason.

I completely agree. I've been having an absolute blast, but it just feels like this is a turn off because I doubt they will be improved much considering they're using someone else's code and have altered it to match Friday the 13th

I'm not mad at them for using the toolkit. I couldn't care less how they do it as long as it gets done. I haven't played it yet but from what I've read and watched, I'm sure I'll enjoy it.

With that said, I am very interested in their thought process. Why did it take so long to implement this if it's a set-it-and-forget-it type of program?

Here's the video preview of the toolkit. It's interesting

I'm not too mad about the fact they didn't make it, just mad the devs never told us and took all credit.

Well.. I warned everyone that the bots were going to be a train wreck and I was correct as always. Sure, some people enjoy playing casual games where you can't possibly lose unless you die in your chair but that's just not for me man..

My only question is why did it take so long? Most toolkits are simply plug and play with simple alterations if you are using models or animations outside of said toolkit..

My best guess is that they tried and failed to make a competent ai so they had to settle with this. Considering i'll only ever touch this mode if I am completely bored out of my mind and just want to see some gore, i'm fine with the retarded ai.

Yeah, the worst part for me is when the developers are sat there on twitter saying that they've poured in a lot of hard work and they're proud of the team and then it looks like they haven't even programmed the AI themselves...

the offline bots are awful. I played a bunch of games last night, most of them stood around or I caught them because they were running into a wall or stuck at a rock running. Only one of them in all the matches had a pocket knife, and I think each time they attempted to fix the 2 seater, but never finished it. None of them fought back when in groups, unless you count one of them running towards me flicking their light on and off and then running away.. (ouch?)

But hey, at least I can practice my shifting ability and "git gud"

Damn. I said in the thread about the offline bots that Gun Media/Illfonic surprised me by doing a good job with the bots, only to find out that they had very little to do with it.

@GunMedia_Ben, @wes, @[IllFonic]Courier, @ShiftySamurai Seriously? All the income generated by the sales of this game and you guys can’t hire a team of PROFESSIONALS to build an AI? Hearing this, I’m guessing there can be nothing done to fix Tommy so that he’s not opening and closing a drawer the entire time he’s on the map? Or to stop the counselors from hiding every thirty seconds? I don’t even like to enter cabins with the counselors because they’ll just hide 99.9% of the time. Hard to fix something you didn’t build in the first place, I’m guessing.

Thats another reason I am annoyed by it. I was really impressed with them, and some hot-fixes is needed to improve their ai pathing but other than that, I was impressed and they were / are fun to play against. Just seems like such a cheap move in my opinion.

And now, simply because of this, I believe they wont be able to do much with the code considering most of it isn't there code. I just hope that guy on the video is wrong but I don't believe so, especially considering the reddit mods decided to delete my post when I just wanted other peoples opinions on it. (Incredibly bad move for the reddit mods).

Holy shit! If true, how dare they base their bot AI routine on a commercial asset instead of building it from scratch! After all, it's not like the game itself is based on Unreal 4 Engine or anything.

They shouldn't have to use assets, they're supposed to be professional developers and code the game themselves, not use OTHER PEOPLES assets... It's not like they're like other indie companies with a limited budget.

I'm sure they had other expenses, you wouldn't even believe the cost of Backpage Escorts these days :tiffbutt::lol:

Are you mad they used Unreal Engine and didn't code the engine from scratch as well?

If they used somebody else's AI software - and that's if, since this is little more than a rumor - so what? It does what it's supposed to do, and stuff like this happens all the time in game development. And if they did use a commercial AI, why do you think it can't be adjusted or tinkered with? That's like saying you can drop assets into an Unreal Engine game but you can never change anything else beyond that.

Considering the amount of money they made from sales, and the fact that they delayed single player to to “work on it,” yes; yes, indeed. There’s also the whole “no credit where credit is due” thing as well. Oh, also the fact that Gun/Illfonic are shady companies to begin with; after all the shit they’ve pulled the past year (unfulfilled backer rewards being very high on that list).

EDIT: Paul Phoenix is a VERY reliable source. He found the coding for Part IV Jason and the Jarvis map quite some time before it was even announced. Not likely to be “just a rumor.”

No actually, I'm not mad that they use the Unreal Engine. In fact, I'm not mad at all.

They made a shi* ton of money and can't even hire some real developers to program the AI? As TestedTwice mentions, they delayed single player to "work on it"... Clearly, not much work has gone into it considering it's not THEIR script. Seriously, take your head out of their asses. I already mentioned in the thread that I'm still having fun with bots, I just want a reason from the developers as to why they may have used a pre-built AI script especially when they have delayed Offline mode for the past 6 months.

It happens all the time in game development? No, it really doesn't. "Asset-Flips" are used by very few developers who can't program themselves. Could you imagine if EA or Ubisoft used assets that wasn't created by them?

Never did I say it can't be adjusted with, I simply said I don't think they'll be able to adjust it much. If they can't create AI in the first place, then they clearly can't adjust it 100% to their standards, can they?

What a big surprise. NOT. Did someone actually think that a company that struggles to deliver a good working MP can actually do the AI by themselves? No way. SP and AI are way, way harder than MP only.

I am also pretty sure i have been reading something on the steamforums about this going to happen. not sure if this was just a guess or it was known already before tough.

Just so you guys are aware, there are those of us who still haven't received our physical backer copy. Australian and European backers who haven't heard anything about it since early November when it was apparently due to ship. No word from Randy despite the many tags, and the manufacturing company just sends you straight back to Gun. Yeah, pretty damn shady I would say.

I honestly don't think the devs know how to program much at all when it comes to AI, which isn't surprising considering they seem to only focus on multiplayer. The red light for me was their excuse for not doing a Jason AI. Yes that would be a challenge but some competent devs could pull it off, which these guys clearly aren't in that area. Not sure why they refuse to hire on some help to program better offline AI (Jason included).
