I'm always on the hunt for a good horror movie and unfortunately it's hard to tell what's good or bad by the reviews. I sat through 'The Witch' and 'The Babadook' and they were awful despite high praise from critics.

I watched 'The Boy' last night and really enjoyed it.

Also saw 'Blair Witch' recently but thought it was so-so, felt like a mash-up of 'Blair Witch', 'Paranormal Activity' and 'Grave Encounters'.

Anyone have any suggestions on good horror movies recently released? Or which ones to avoid?

Edit:
No spoilers, please. ;)

Just seen phantasm:ravager. Avoid it. Hardcore phans only. It was sad to see the series end on a low note. Turned into a bad "made for tv" movie due to shitty cgi and bad camerawork.

Watched Hush recently, its on Netflix, and it isn't exactly a slasher, more of a home invasion movie, but it's one of the most original and best horror movies I've seen recently. Also loved The Green Room.

And as for worst I would've warned you against Babadook and The Witch. It's true we're getting some sick new horror movies from indie studios but to me these weren't good, if you like indie horror films I'd suggest It Follows (which is somewhat recent)!

Recent watched good horror movie (well I liked it):   Ouija: Origin of Evil

Recent watched bad horror movie (well I hated it):  Don't Breath

( Course take this at you leisure as I saw the Witch too and hated it, though I really loved The Babadook. I liked the Boy too...though I figured out the secret within 20 mins of movie time.  I avoided Blair Witch.  I fell for the hype back when the first one came out and I made a vow that day to never watch a "shaky cam" movie ever again. )

I enjoyed the Babadook it made you think, but the original Blair witch project was the scariest movie ever, the new one was eh ok ...
I suggest - Sinister, it's older but great!

I suggest can you give us a big list of films you wanna see and we can tell you our thoughts?

The Witch was terrible. My friends and I saw it in the theaters and everyone fell asleep.
Hush was really good. Very tense and it's on Netflix.

People is 50/50 with the Babadook and The Witch. For me, they have their intense moments. It's like Friday the 13th, we love the movies, a lot other hate them xD

For this recent generation i'll stay with The Conjuring (first one), of course the trick of those movies are the loud sound. Best of all time i pick The Exorcist.

The last one i saw that i think was really bad is VHS.

I recommend Howl. It's a recent movie (2015) about a classic monster (werewolf). Thankfully it doesn't try to modernize the concept of a werewolf, it keeps it old school. Basically a night train traveling through the English countryside breaks down and the passengers get attacked by werewolf. Good stuff.

I can't, they were awful. ;)

Thanks for the suggestions. I saw It Follows and I was 50/50 on it- neat idea, awkward execution. Sinister was alright too, kind of a lame ending. I guess I should say I don't find kids scary.

I'll look into Lights Out, Hush and Howl.

I liked You're Next and We Are Still Here but the latter is a slow burn.

I enjoyed the Babadook it made you think, but the original Blair witch project was the scariest movie ever, the new one was eh ok ...

Off the top of my head I can't think of a list- I've just started to scrape the bottom of the barrel with older horror films and I'm wondering if any of the newer ones are any good. Like I mentioned, the critics praised The Witch and Babadook and they were awful so I thought I'd ask some real horror fans.

I haven't seen the Ouija movies.
Is Mirrors or Oculus any good?
Wolf Creek?

I would also suggest watching scathing very gory stuff

I've seen my share, from Cannibal Holocaust to Dead Alive to the modern "torture porn." Gore doesn't mean what it used to- practical effects, like Day of the Dead, are where it's at. :)

Wolf Creek?

Wolf Creek 2 for sure. I actually haven't seen the first one,and I have no idea what made me randomly watch part 2 blindly but I did and really enjoyed the dynamic between killer/victim. The show wasn't bad either. Wow,I guess I should go watch the first one...

I really liked
Don't Breathe
I Spit On Your Grave 3

I didn't mind Don't Breathe- a decent home invasion flick.

I enjoyed I Spit on Your Grave (the original.) I watched about half of the remake but didn't finish. It's hard to sit through when you know what's coming for the female lead. The revenge is the pay off though. I'm glad to hear Part 3 is good. Is the second any good? If so, I may have to finish the remake.

I read somewhere there's plans for a sequel to the original with the original lead actress.

I really like Hush by Mike Flanagan. I saw these last sunday night. It's a horror thriller, with slasher touches. A deaf-mute woman living alone in the woods is stalked by a masked killer. I found it very trained, well acted, although I hated some decisions that took the characters but nothing that drags the final result.

I don't like The Faith of Anna Waters. A tangled montage, a simple story but a lot of effort to make it "complex" to the point that it became a very heavy story. In addition the performances did not support much. It's a film about exorcisms but they try to sneak conspiracies, symbology ... and binary code.

i don't like the first ouija. But ouija: origin of evil I found it decent. Oculus I liked it a lot, you never know it's real or not. It was a pleasant surprise, I had a friend, I saw her without knowing anything, and I liked it. I would not see her again, I would get bored a second time. It's to see only once I suppose.
