Counselor Clothing Upgrade

Hey guys...So I've never liked how our counselors clothes looked. They seemed to glow in the dark. You could go to the darkest parts of the map, and their clothing seemed to gather and reflect light. You could never really hide like that. Jason's clothing has always been perfect. So I grabbed the character artist and the lighting guy and we set off to solve the mystery. First let's talk about light.

 

So I'm not a scientist nor am I well versed on illumination terms, however I do have a basic knowledge of how light bounces, scatters and is absorbed. And clothing is not a hard surface, right? So light should partially absorb into the clothing. The light that is reflected is what creates "color" to our eyes, right? Right. 

 

So let's take a look at an OLDER image of Tiffany, the Flirty Girl.

Notice how light hits her clothes and almost 100% of the light bounces back, thus making her look almost cell-shaded? That's bad. Now let's look at the updated version of Tiffany.

See the difference? Now light is properly being absorbed and the correct amount of light is being scattered across the clothing, and reflected back. This makes colors more realistic to the eye. It also allows Tiffany to hide properly without looking like a neon sign that says "KILL ME JASON". 

 

Pretty neat, huh?

Ughh..yeah this forum hates me when I try to do anything with images. This interface is archaic and not conducive to our TL:DR lifestyles. ;)

It's also a great example how the difference between 'better' graphics on different games is really down to the quality and use of their lighting system.

 

Any game can look a little flat and undetailed without good lighting tech.
